Hummus

Hummus is made from a chickpea base, and is added to olive oil, garlic and sesame paste (tahini), to create this delicious spread, dip and topping.

Because of these ingredients, hummus is packed with oleic acids, polyphenols, Vitamin D, and omega 3 fatty acids, calcium, iron and protein. In addition, just two tablespoons of hummus provides five percent of the daily recommended value of phosphorus and magnesium.

While this dish is popular in mediterranean diets, it has become a staple in the organic and healthy eating community as a replacement for heavy, calorie-dense party dips.

Hummus has also been found helpful in:

  • Improving cardiovascular health
  • Reducing the risk of colorectal cancers
  • Promoting bone health
  • Delivering oxygen throughout the body
  • Aiding in kidney and nerve function
  • Boosting immune function
  • Reducing hunger cravings
  • Maintaining balanced blood sugar levels

Hummus is a great substitute for many unhealthy condiments and spreads, including mayonnaise on sandwiches. With a little extra olive oil, hummus can also make a great salad dressing!
